Small rc helicopters are very common and very fun, but are hard to fly outdoors – especially if there is much of any wind.  Larger rc helicopters are better for the outdoors.  Syma, Double Horse, and some other companies are making bigger helicopters, about 26-28 inches long, for this purpose.  Many of these are coaxial models, but there are some single rotor ones as well that aren’t too expensive.  Coaxial rotor helis are inherently pretty stable, but have limited forward speed.  Remote control pilots often end up wanting more forward speed than is possible wtih those type of models.

All the cheaper, bigger helicopters to fly outdoors are fixed pitch.  This means you cannot adjust the pitch of the main rotor blades.  For outdoor flying in wind, it is better to have a model with collective pitch.  They are more expensive, but there are some rc helicopters for sale like this for less than $200.  Esky is one brand to look for if you have a more limited budget.
